Phenylpropanoids from the fruits of Nicandra physaloides and their anti-inflammatory activities

Abstract: Twenty-one phenylpropanoids, including 1 new (1) and 20 known phenylpropanoids (2-21), were isolated and identified from the fruits of Nicandra physaloides. The structures of these compounds were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectra referring to the literatures, together with mass spectrometry. It was found that the isolated compounds, except for 7, 18 and 19, showed the different levels of inhibitions on NO production by LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells at IC values from 27.0 to 97.3 μM.

“…The anti-inflammatory effect of phenylpropanoids from Dendropanax dentigerous was exerted by inhibiting NF-κB, AKT, and JNK signaling pathways in TNF-α-induced MH7A cells ( 52 ). Bingyou Yang found that the phenylpropanoids from the fruits of Nicandra physaloides showed anti-inflammatory activity ( 53 ). However, there are few studies on the immune activity of phenylpropanoid compounds.…”

“…Owing to the presence of various bioactive constituents and their stability, many researchers have explored biologically active natural products, including those that have anti-inflammatory properties [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]. In particular, phenylpropanoid compounds isolated from natural products are known to exhibit anti-inflammatory activities [ 21 , 26 ]. We isolated a new phenylpropanoid compound, 4-((1 R ,2 R )-3-hydroxy-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methoxypropan-2-yl)-2-methoxyphenol (HHMP), from the fruit extract of J. mandshurica in our previous study [ 19 ].…”

“…A previous study reported the inhibition of melanogenesis by HHMP in vitro [ 20 ]; however, no other activities of HHMP have been studied so far. Other phenylpropanoid compounds have been proven to inhibit inflammatory responses in vitro [ 21 , 22 ]; therefore, we investigated the protective effects of HHMP isolated from J. mandshurica on LPS-induced inflammatory response in RAW 264.7 cells and zebrafish larvae models.…”
