Photo- and electrochromic properties of covalently connected symmetrical and unsymmetrical spiropyran–polyoxometalate dyads

Abstract: Polyoxometalates covalently linked to one or two spiropyran entities have been isolated. These organic-inorganic hybrids exhibit multi-electrochromic and photochromic properties.

“…[10] Aiming at multielectrochromic and photochromic properties, Pierre et al obtained one or two spiropyran grafted Anderson-type POMs with Mn III as the center atom through the same synthetic procedure. [11] Very recently, a range of improvements for the isolation of asymmetrically grafted organic-inorganic hybrid Mn-Anderson-type POM compounds were summarized and reported. [12] However, the above mentioned approaches still result in an initially symmetric Tris-modification.…”

“…Amplitude sweep measurements in Figure 2a show that the blank gel has a higher viscoelastic modulus (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20) kPa) compared to the 20k porous gel with a modulus of 6 -7 kPa and the least stiff 2k porous gel …”

“…The closed, colourless, hydrophobic form referred often as benzospiropyran and the open, coloured, charged merocyanine form. The molecules can be switched between these two forms by light irradiation (photochromism) [15][16][17], electrochemical stimulation (electrochromism) [17][18][19][20], or changing the solvent environment (solvatochromism). [17,21] As a result of these unique properties, spiropyrans have been used, in combination with many different materials, for the fabrication of both sensors, actuators and stimulus responsive materials.…”

“…with high photochromic performance, have been recently integrated in POM structures via covalent bonds [241][242][243] and noncovalent interactions [244,245] with different performances. The systematic study of Hakouk et al [242] is especially interesting since they analyze the photochromic behavior taking into account several physical parameters (SP structural characteristics, SP/POM and SP/solvent solid-state interactions, molar volume, etc).…”
