Photo ID-based assessment of the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) population in Kwatisore, Wondama Bay, West Papua, Indonesia

Abstract: Background The presence of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) in Wondama Bay has long been known and the species is an icon of this region. In addition to their enormous size, these sharks are not dangerous to or fearful of humans, so there has been growing interest in utilizing this animal for eco-tourism. “…A study during the period of January to December 2020 showed that there were 690 appearances of whale sharks in the morning, 135 appearances in the noon and 198 appearances in the afternoon with the conditions of Cenderawasih Bay sea surface temperature (SST) during 2020 around 28-33°C and chlorophyll-a is approximately from 0-12.96 mg/m 3 [8]. The time of the whale sharks' appearances at 06.00 WIT to 12.00 WIT are the best time to see them [22,16].
