PHOTOACOUSTIC TOMOGRAPHY: PRINCIPLES AND ADVANCES (Invited Review)

Abstract: Abstract-Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is an emerging imaging modality that shows great potential for preclinical research and clinical practice. As a hybrid technique, PAT is based on the acoustic detection of optical absorption from either endogenous chromophores, such as oxy-hemoglobin and deoxy-hemoglobin, or exogenous contrast agents, such as organic dyes and nanoparticles. Because ultrasound scatters much less than light in tissue, PAT generates high-resolution images in both the optical ballistic and d… Show more

“…18,19 With the development of new contrast agents such as gold nanorods and nanocages, PAI combines the most compelling features of optical imaging and ultrasound imaging, providing both high optical contrast and high resolution ultrasound including in vivo in deep tissues. [20][21][22] Au NCs stabilized by glutathione (GSH) are probably one of the most described NCs in the literature with a precise control of their size and their structure. [23][24][25][26] The natural peptide GSH has a zwitterionic structure and, when coated on the particle surface, could prevent the detection by a Author to whom correspondence should be addressed.…”

“…For example, preclinical photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a hybrid modality, combining the high contrast and spectroscopic-based specificity of optical imaging with the high spatial resolution of ultrasound imaging. PA imaging offers greater specificity than conventional ultrasound imaging with the ability to detect haemoglobin, lipids, water and other light-absorbing chromophores, but with greater penetration depth than purely optical imaging modalities that rely on ballistic photons [21,22]. Herein, we attach immense importance to multimodal imaging from the combination of MRI with FOI.…”
