Photobiomodulation with Near Infrared Light Helmet in a Pilot, Placebo Controlled Clinical Trial in Dementia Patients Testing Memory and Cognition

Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a common, chronic expensive debilitating neurodegenerative disease with no current treatments to prevent the physical deterioration of the brain and the consequent cognitive deficits. The current pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease is the accumulation of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) of hyperphosphorylated tau protein and amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques. Antibody therapy of Tau and Amyloid beta, vaccines and other methods to decrease Tau and or Amyloid have not been successful after c… Show more

“…Berman et al [151] carried out a small pilot double blind, placebo-controlled trial in subjects diagnosed with dementia (n = 11, including six active, three controls and two dropouts) to assess the effect of 28 consecutive, six-minute transcranial sessions of NIR PBM using 1060-1080 nm LEDs embedded in a helmet. The results showed improvement in executive function, clock drawing, immediate recall, praxis memory, visual attention and task switching (Trails A&B) as well as a trend for improved EEG amplitude and connectivity measures.…”

“…Thus, training procedures or interventions that can effectively improve these frontal functions are clinically important. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a newly developed, noninvasive interventional technique that has been found to exert positive effects on cognitive function according to both animal [21][22][23] and human [24][25][26] studies. The mechanism of PBM is based on bioenergetics, photochemistry, and photobiology.…”

“…Andy Bassett may have envisioned a medical utopia decade's too soon using directed energy but the future demands of this world wide obesity, aging and neurodegeneration epidemic will outstrip medical resources if prompt action is not taken! 34…”
