Photocatalysis of the Homogeneous Water‐Gas Shift Reaction under Ambient Conditions by Cationic Iridium (III) Complexes

Abstract: The first water–gas process catalyzed by Ir complexes of type 1 is characterized by high efficiency and extremely mild conditions. Substitution in the 4,4′ position of the bipyridine ligand by electron‐withdrawing groups enhances the catalytic activity, since the activation energy of the rate‐determing step is halved.

“…[30] Ir-bipyridine complexes,w hich are widely utilized for their photocatalytic properties, have been investigated by Ziessel in their capacity to promote the WGSR. [31] Despite the advances in the low temperature WGSR brought about by the use of homogeneous and photocatalysis, these systems have yet to match the levels of performance and robustness of heterogeneous catalysts.T hus,t he HT and LT shift catalysts,o riginally intended for the synthesis of ammonia and improved over the course of the years,s till represent today the basis for the catalysis of the WGSR on an industrial scale.…”

“…[185] Interestingly,T akahashi et al found that, while Co 2 (CO) 8 is inactive in the formation of furanones, at higher temperatures it promotes the formation of indanones from aryl-substituted alkynes, through aC ÀHinsertion process [Eq. (31)]. [186] Ther eaction proceeds via the corresponding indenone, which undergoes reduction under WGSR conditions and was shown to be acompetent intermediate.…”
