Photochromic inorganic–organic hybrid: a new approach for switchable photoluminescence in the solid state and partial photochromic phenomenon

Abstract: A photochromic inorganic-organic hybrid based on in situ generated MV(2+) cation (MV(2+) = methyl viologen = N,N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium) has been obtained, in which a vagarious partial photochromic phenomenon together with its photoluminescence modulation properties are reported for the first time in the inorganic-organic hybrids.

“…When complex 1 changed from orange to violet under UV irradiation, whether it be exposed to light irradiation or heating, the color of the sample will not change back. ESR measurement indicates that the coloration process is due to the generation of radicals (g = 2.003) (Figure 3), which is close to previous reports for free organic radicals [22]. …”

“…This in situ N -alkylation has been well developed in our group for synthesizing metal halide-based hybrids. 12 (Et 2 DABCO) 2+ is larger than the (H 2 DABCO) 2+ dication in size, which results in larger channels in the 3-D inorganic framework of 2 . There are eleven crystallographically independent Pb atoms in the structure and they are situated in a distorted octahedral or mono-capped prismatic coordination environment.…”

“…Currently, the efficient luminescence photoswitching for photochromic materials is very crucial to practical applications of data storage devices, which are not only highly sensitive and selective, but able to provide nondestructive readout with high spatial information. 52,53 Among various luminescent readout ways (Downshifting, Quantum cutting, and Upconversion), the upconversion luminescence with two-photon absorption is preferred due to its nonlinear optical process and quadratic dependence of excitation on intensity, which is useful for 3D data storage and imaging. 54 In this study, we found that the Ho/Yb codoped KNLN ceramics exhibit both upconversion emission (Figure 4) and photochromic behavior ( Figure 5).…”
