“…Pathological angiogenesis is also thought to play an important role in corneal allografts by facilitating the exposure of antigens in the donor cornea to the immune system [2]. Many medical and surgical treatments, including use of steroids [3][4][5], use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents [6][7][8], argon laser photocoagulation [9], photodynamic therapy [1,10], and limbal stem cell transplantation [11,12], have been effective in inhibiting corneal neovascularization in both animal and human models. However, further investigation is needed to determine whether anti-angiogenic therapy is effective for treatment against actively growing and established corneal neovascularization.…”

“…The effect of rAAV-CMV-endostatin on experimentally induced corneal angiogenesis was evaluated by comparing the extent of neovascularization with that in the control AAV-CMV-EGFP or PBS groups (Figure 4). Based on this grading system, the average number of eyes exhibiting the different degrees of neovascularization at different time points (7,10,14, and 21 days after cauterization; see Table 1) was evaluated. Here, the rAAV-CMV-EGFP treatment group showed a significantly higher occurrence of severe neovascularization than the rAAV-CMV-endostatin treatment group.…”

“…[251][252][253] The largest, by Yoon et al, 253 used verteporfin in 18 eyes with established CNV secondary to a number of etiologies, although principally LK (8 of 18) and PK (5 of 18). At the 12-month follow-up, 9 of 18 were classified as have completely occluded; 5 of 18 partially occluded; 2 of 18 recanalized; and 2 were regarded as failures.…”

“…There were no systemic or ocular complications noted with the dye. The disadvantages of verteporfin include its high cost, 252,253 photosensitivity reactions, and infusion-related back pain. 257 Fossarello et al, 252 noted that the costs may be greatly reduced if subconjunctival verteporfin may be proven to be effective and safe as it has been shown to be for the treatment of pterygia.…”

“…In addition, PDT has proven especially useful in ophthalmology and has been evaluated in the treatment of ocular tumours (Lingua 1991;Kim et al 1996), and choroidal (Woodburn et al 2002) and corneal (Fossarello et al 2003;Brooks et al 2004) neovascularization.
