Photodynamic therapy with Bixa orellana extract and LED for the reduction of halitosis: study protocol for a randomized, microbiological and clinical trial

Abstract: BackgroundHalitosis is an unpleasant breath odour that can interfere with the professional life, social life and quality of life of people who suffer from it. A modality of treatment that has been increasing in dentistry is antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). Bixa orellana, popularly known as “urucum” is a plant native to Brazil. The seeds are used to produce a dye that is largely used in the food, textile, paint and cosmetic industries. The aim of this study is to verify whether aPDT with Bixa orellana… Show more

“…Six points were irradiated with a distance of 1 cm between points, considering the halo of light scattering and the effectiveness of aPDT. The apparatus was previously calibrated with a wavelength of 395–480 nm, for 20 seconds per point, and energy of 9.6J, and the light was irradiated so that a halo of 2 cm in diameter per point was formed [ 22 , 23 ].…”

“…Hypericin is a red pigment produced by Hypericum perforatum with an antioxidant activity, and it has been recently reported to possess a photosensitive potency (Napoli et al., 2018). The hypericin can produce ROS through the photochemical mechanism of both type I and type II to destroy bacterial cells when exposed to red light (600–700 nm) (Gonçalves et al., 2018).…”

“…Bixa orellana is a plant native to Brazil. From its seeds, it is possible to extract a dye, popularly known as “urucum.” This dye has important antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, and recent studies have shown its potential as a photosensitizer in aPDT [ 3 , 6 , 11 , 12 ]. Due to its positive characteristics, especially regarding the lack of mutagenic and cytotoxic activity and antimicrobial effect, the Bixa orellana extract (Fórmula e Ação, São Paulo, SP, Brazil) could be considered a suitable candidate as a photosensitizer.…”
