Photodynamic Toxicity of Chlorophyllin against Fasciola gigantica Carrier Snail Indoplanorbis exustus in Visible Spectral Band

Abstract: Background:Fasciolosis is one of the most debilitating diseases caused by liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica. Snail Lymnaeidae and Planorbidae is the intermediate host of these flukes. Snail population management is a good tool to control fasciolosis because gastropods represent the weakest link in the life-cycle of trematode. Aim of the present study is to explore the molluscicidal activity of chlorophyllin in visible spectral band against Fasciola gigantica carrier snail Indoplanorbis exustus. M… Show more

“…Chlorophyll is the most abundant natural pigment and has been considered as hypoglycemic agent via mechanism of free radicals' inhibition [ 6 ]. Chlorophyllin is a semisynthetic substance that is created by replacing the chlorophyll magnesium ion with another metal and removing the phytol tail [ 7 ]. Recent studies have shown that both chlorophyllin and metformin (a medication for diabetes) inhibit gluconeogenesis and increase glucose uptake by peripheral muscles [ 8 , 9 ].…”

“…CHLIN is distinguished by an intense Q-band at 630 nm [15], which is an ideal characteristic for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT), a technique applied in the case of cancer treatments and damaging diseased living tissue treatments with visible light in the presence of photosensitizers and O 2 [16,17]. The most common chlorophylls used in PDT are chlorine e 6 and other synthetic chlorines [18][19][20].…”
