Photoelectron spectroscopic studies of the interfacial reaction between glass and commercial adhesive

Abstract: The valence band and core-level photoelectron spectroscopy [using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS)] were used to probe the interfacial reaction between glass and a commercial adhesive (Loctite). The interaction was investigated by comparing experimental valence band spectra with spectra calculated for various possible interaction schemes. The valence band spectrum for the interfacial region between the glass and the adhesive was obtained using difference s… Show more

“…However, the APS indicates the C-C to C-N peak ratio is too high, indicating some likely hydrocarbon contaminant in the APS. The VB spectra in Figure 4 compare well to previous studies on polyethylene oxide [52] and glass [53], although the peak around 11 eV is not resolved in the calculated spectra due to the absence of sodium in the glass model. The APS-model spectrum showed similar results up to 15 eV to previous studies, which also suggested the peak around 13 eV was predominantly due to siloxane-type interactions [54].…”

“…The creation of interfaces between oxide glass and polymers is pervasive in science, engineered coatings and composites, biotechnology, and even architecture . However, our understanding of the chemical bonding structure at those interfaces and the magnitude and stability of the adhesion it generates is limited.…”
