Photonic crystal fiber half-taper probe based refractometer

Abstract: A compact singlemode -photonic crystal fiber -singlemode fiber tip (SPST) refractive index sensor is demonstrated in this paper. A CO2 laser cleaving technique is utilsed to provide a clean-cut fiber tip which is then coated by a layer of gold to increase reflection. An average sensitivity of 39.1 nm/RIU and a resolvable index change of 2.56×10 -4 are obtained experimentally with a ~3.2 µm diameter SPST. The temperature dependence of this fiber optic sensor probe is presented. The proposed SPST refractometer i… Show more

“…When the RI of the analyte is changed from 1.3310 to 1.3715, the wavelength of the dip shifts from 1544.4 nm to 1553 nm (wavelength sensitivity of 212 nm/RIU) and the intensity of the dip also changes from −78.16 to −83.43 dBm (intensity sensitivity of 130 dB/RIU). This sensitivity is higher than the previously reported results based on similar configurations without any coating [ 71 , 72 ].…”

“…Sensitivity increases linearly with an increase in the number of periods. The sensitivity of 230 nm/RIU is higher than what was previously reported (Wang and Tang, 2012;Wang et al, 2014;Ni et al, 2016;Dash et al, 2020). Considering the resolution of OSA as 0.01 nm, the resolution of the proposed sensor was 4.34 × 10 −5 RIU.…”

“…Compared with conventional waveguide MZIs, microfiber MZIs can provide a sensitivity that is one order of magnitude higher and a smaller footprint between tens and hundreds of micrometers [20]. The microfiber modal interferometers fabricated from single-mode fiber [81, 84-86, 99, 104, 105], microstructured fiber [83,[106][107][108], and multimode fiber [82,109,110] also provide the advantages of compactness, high sensitivity, and simple fabrication.…”
