Photoperiodic Control of Carbon Distribution during the Floral Transition inArabidopsis

Abstract: Flowering is a crucial process that demands substantial resources. Carbon metabolism must be coordinated with development through a control mechanism that optimizes fitness for any physiological need and growth stage of the plant. However, how sugar allocation is controlled during the floral transition is unknown. Recently, the role of a CONSTANS (CO) ortholog (Cr-CO) in the control of the photoperiod response in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and its influence on starch metabolism was demonstrated. … Show more

“…Transcript levels fall and GBSS synthesis is very strongly reduced in the latter part of the day. As the granule is degraded at night, GBSS is released and appears to be immediately degraded Ortiz-Marchena et al, 2014;Seung et al, 2015). These observations raise the possibility that the granule surface is increasingly susceptible to degradation as the day proceeds because its amylose:amylopectin ratio changes.…”

“…Waxy genes were identified in many species, including maize (Shure et al 1983), rice (Wang et al 1995), cassava (Ceballos et al 2007), wheat (Nakamura et al 1995, Hung et al 2007), potato (Hovenkamp-Hermelink et al 1987, and Arabidopsis (Ovecka et al 2012, Ortiz-Marchena et al 2014. Several properties distinguish GBSS from other starch synthase isoforms.…”

“…For instance, the photoperiod and vernalization pathways can also impact germination traits (Chiang et al, 2009;Chen et al, 2014), inflorescence architecture (Krieger et al, 2010), leaf size and shape (Cartolano et al, 2015;Digel et al, 2016), and carbohydrate metabolism at flowering (Ortiz-Marchena et al, 2014). Such pleiotropic effects may mediate tradeoffs that mitigate the selective benefit on seasonal phenology.…”
