“…The search combining "light pollution" OR "artificial light", and restricted to the Agricultural and Biological Sciences section, yielded 233 relevant references. These were three reviews in which artificial lighting was not the main topic (Borniger & Nelson, 2017;Brelsford, Nybakken, Kotilainen, & Robson, 2019;Higuchi, 2010), and one research paper on humans (Martín-Olalla, 2019). In comparison, using the combination of keywords (tropic* OR equat*) and "artificial light", "artificial" AND "light", or "light pollution", we identified 11 references (Bennie, Duffy, et al, 2015;Dorado-Correa, Rodríguez-Rocha, & Brumm, 2016;Erkhert, 1976;Frank, Gabbert, Chaves-Campos, & LaVal, 2019;De Freitas, Bennie, Mantovani, & Gaston, 2017;Gineste et al, 2017;González-Bernal, Greenlees, Brown, & Shine, 2016;Gupta & Pushkala, 2016;Lewanzik & Voigt, 2014;Rivas et al, 2018;Thakurdas et al, 2009).…”

“…A final search using the combination ("artificial light" OR "light pollution") AND "latitud*" yielded 59 hits but only four additional and partly relevant references. These were three reviews in which artificial lighting was not the main topic (Borniger & Nelson, 2017;Brelsford, Nybakken, Kotilainen, & Robson, 2019;Higuchi, 2010), and one research paper on humans (Martín-Olalla, 2019). These figures highlight the publication bias between biomes and the fact that authors do not explicitly consider the biogeographical context.…”

“…Photoperiod—the period of daylight per day—may be the most regular, non‐equatorial environmental change on this annual schedule. Photoperiodism is the responsivity to photoperiod, and it regulates an annual cycle in an individual's life‐history stages, such as reproduction, moult and dormancy (Borniger & Nelson, 2017; Hazlerigg & Wagner, 2006; Walton, Weil, & Nelson, 2011; Wingfield, 2008; Wingfield, Hahn, & Doak, 1993).…”

“…Melatonin is an indoleamine hormone produced and secreted into circulation primarily by the pineal gland in mammals, where it acts as an endogenous signal of darkness [56,[67][68][69][70] . Through a poly-synaptic pathway, the suprachiasmatic nuclei control melatonin production and secretion, rendering the concentrations of this hormone sensitive to environmental light input [71] .…”
