Photoprotective Effects of Selected Amino Acids on Naproxen Photodegradation in Aqueous Media

Abstract: It is important to develop a photostabilization strategy to ensure the quality of photosensitive compounds, including pharmaceuticals. This study focused on the protective effects of 20 amino acids on the photodegradation of naproxen (NX), a photosensitive pharmaceutical, to clarify the important nature of a good photostabilizer. Our previous report indicated the photodegradability of NX and the protective effects of some antioxidants on its photodegradation, therefore, this compound was used as a model compou… Show more

“…The absorption spectra were recorded for l -phenylalanine and l -tyrosine in water and in association with SP and CP. For pure l -phenylalanine and pure l -tyrosine, the absorption maxima occur at, λ max , 257.60 and 274.80 nm, respectively, and are in accordance to the literature . On addition of the aqueous solution of propionate salts to the aqueous amino acids, the absorbance intensified (hyperchromic shift) in both the cases (Figure ).…”

“…For pure L-phenylalanine and pure L-tyrosine, the absorption maxima occur at, λ max , 257.60 and 274.80 nm, respectively, and are in accordance to the literature. 46 On addition of the aqueous solution of propionate salts to the aqueous amino acids, the absorbance intensified (hyperchromic shift) in both the cases (Figure 3). The value of E max increases with addition of CP/SP without change in λ max , evidencing hydrophilic interactions between solute (amino acids) and cosolute (SP/CP) molecules.…”

“…For the additional research, 20 amino acids were added to NPX suspension and their photoprotective effects were evaluated. Three amino acids, cysteine, tyrosine and tryptophan, suppressed NPX photodegradation differently from other amino acids [68]. From the results of antioxidative activity measurement and UV spectral analysis, it was speculated that cysteine suppressed NPX photodegradation due to its antioxidative activity and both tyrosine and tryptophan suppressed it due to their UV filtering activities.…”

“…Therefore, it is important to investigate photostability of pharmaceuticals, especially in its changed dosage forms. Until now, our group investigated and reported the photostability of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as naproxen [14][15][16], pranoprofen [17,18], sulindac [12], dihydropyridine type calcium channel antagonist such as amlodipine [19], felodipine [20], azelnidipine [21], nitrendipine [22], antiepileptic drug phenytoin [13], hyperlipidemia drug clinofibrate [23], antihistamine triprolidine [24] etc. In this paper, we investigated the photostability of cardiotonic drug denopamine (DP, active form: R (-)-form, C 18 H 23 NO 4 : 317.38, Fig.…”
