Photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, and water relations in young sugar beet plants as affected by sulfur supply

Abstract: The effect of different concentrations of sulfur (1 and 3 mM) and interruption of sulfur (S) supply for 25 days on the photosynthesis and leaf water relations in young sugar beet plants (Beta vulgaris L.) was studied in water culture, under greenhouse conditions. Interruption of S-supply significantly reduced the content of sulfur, chlorophylls a+b and carotenoids, leaf area, density of stomatal and epidermal cells, transpiration rate and leaf water potential, while it increased the free proline content and st… Show more

“…PDW-233 recorded higher shoot and root protein averaged over (CO 2 ) and nutrient treatments. This result is in agreement with earlier reports (Kastori et al, 2000;Tewari et al, 2010). The protein concentration in roots was not affected due to nutrient deprivation treatments, particularly in PDW-233.…”

“…It is now widely accepted that chlorophyll fluorescence parameters provide useful information on PSII activity and photosynthetic metabolism in stressed plants (Kastori et al, 2000;Nedbal et al, 2000). Maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (F v /F m ) is known to be related to leaf photosynthetic efficiency (Shangguan et al, 2000).…”

“…However, with respect to foliar nutrition, F v /F m is best regarded as a general indicator of nutrient dysfunction. Relationships between chlorophyll fl uorescence and nutrient defi ciency have been established for P (Loustou et al, 1999), S (Kastori et al, 2000), Fe (Morales et al,. 2000), B (Kasotri et al, 1995, and Mg (Laing et al, 2000).…”
