Phototherapy with Narrow-Band UVB in Adult Guttate Psoriasis: Results and Patient Assessment

Abstract: Background: Acute guttate psoriasis (AGP) is a distinctive clinical entity with good response to treatment with narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB). Objective: To investigate the results of NB-UVB phototherapy in adult patients with adult guttate psoriasis. Material and Methods: We carried out a prospective, open, and observational study. Patients over 18 years with more than 5% of body surface area affected were included. The PASI was assessed prior to and after treatment. The follow-up period was 18 months. A… Show more

“…While calcipotriol/betamethasone is usually prescribed as a first‐line treatment in mild to moderate psoriasis, NB‐UVB is typically used in more severe cases or in patients who do not respond to topical therapies . Although several studies have been performed to compare various phototherapy modalities, to date no direct comparisons of topical therapies and phototherapy have been carried out . Moreover, only two studies have investigated NB‐UVB used concurrently with topical therapies: one study evaluated NB‐UVB combined with tazarotene, and another investigated NB‐UVB with concurrent calcipotriol …”

“…[154][155][156] Studies have also shown that narrow-band UVB is more effective than broad-band UVB (wavelength 290-320 nm). [157][158][159][160][161] As such, narrow-band UVB is the preferred phototherapy for guttate psoriasis in children over 6 years of age. [157][158][159][160][161] Psoralen plus UVA (wavelength 320-400 nm) (PUVA) phototherapy has also been used for the treatment of guttate psoriasis.…”

“…Furthermore, the use of MTX is contraindicated for pregnant and breastfeeding women [16]. Other therapeutic agents for psoriasis are narrowband ultraviolet B [17] and certain biologic agents [18]. However, these agents are not widely available and are relatively expensive, necessitating the development of new, safer, and more affordable anti-psoriasis agents with anti-inflammatory and proapoptotic effects.…”
