Phyllosoma de Jasus frontalis (Decapoda: Palinuridae) en la costa continental de Chile

Abstract: The presence of a Palinuridae phyllosoma larvae near Salado Bay (27º'S) north-central coast of Chile, is reported. The identification is discussed and the possibility of this larvae being Projasus bahamondei, which is the only species from the family that is described for the area, is discarded. The shape, size and position of the cephalic, pereionic, abdominal and telson appendices concords with descriptions of advanced stage Jasus frontalis larvae. Moreover, the specimen described here has five pairs of bira… Show more

“…At the same island-scale both species were in general more abundant at the deeper strata (10 m). At least for J. frontalis all individuals found, corresponded to earlier larval stages; a conspicuous pattern given that phyllosoma of this species can reach a total length 10 times those found in our study (Mujica et al 2010). On the other hand, the broader size spectrum exhibited throughout by A. delfi ni suggests that we were able to capture more larval stages of this species at nearshore sites around the island.…”

“…However, exopods on the maxillipeds 2 and 3 of 'phyllosoma X' are incipient with very few setae. Such incipient or bud-like exopods without setae on the maxillipeds have been observed in the late stage phyllosomas of Jasus (Báez 1973;Lesser 1978;Miller 1985;McWilliam and Phillips 1987;Nishida et al 1990;Mujica et al, 2010), whereas exopods on the maxillipeds 2 and 3 of the present specimen and Gurney's 'Palinurus sp. ' are eminent and equipped with bunch of setae (Fig.…”
