Phylogenetic relationship of Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla aurita) revealed by complete mitochondrial genome

Abstract: The Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) is an extremely endangered species, it has been banned from international trade due to a sharp decline of the population number in China. It is difficult to distinguish among subspecies, thus making it entangled in law enforement. In order to clarify this chaos, we determined and annotated the whole mtDNA genome of the Chinese pangolin. The complete mitogenome is 16 573 bp in length, includeing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and one control regio… Show more

“…We also obtained 1,773 single-copy orthologous coding sequences comprising 1,872,840 nucleotides from the genomes. In addition, 169 mitogenomic sequences with an average length of 14,919 bp were obtained from the 138 genomic sequences and 31 published sequences ( SI Appendix , Table S3 ) ( 14 , 26 31 ).…”

“…In addition, the nucleotide composition of the mitogenome was slightly A + T biased, which is similar to that of the other pangolins (Suppl. material 1 ) ( Du Toit et al 2017 , Hua et al 2020 ). These results also confirmed the A + T bias, which has been reported in several other mammalian species ( Dou et al 2016 ).…”

“…Thus, the subspecies status of the Chinese pangolin remains to be clarified with genetic evidence, including the nominal Formosan pangolin in Taiwan. However, the taxonomic status of all three subspecies has not been well resolved by genetic evidence ( Wu et al 2007 , Hua et al 2020 , Wu et al 2020 ). This impedes regional conservation and potential reintroduction, as well as illegal trade traces and law enforcement.…”

“…The Sunda pangolin ( Manis javanica ) and Chinese pangolin ( Manis pentadactyla ) are both listed as endangered species [ 1 , 2 , 3 ] and are among the most trafficked mammals in the world [ 4 ]. All pangolin species are classified as a National Level I Protected Animals in China [ 5 ] and are listed as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species [ 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”
