Phylogenetic relationships among tetraploid species ofBellevalia(Asparagaceae) endemic to south-central Mediterranean

Abstract: In the south-central Mediterranean four tetraploid species of Bellevalia occur: B. dolichophylla, B. galitensis, B. mauritanica, and B. pelagica. Another group of plants, morphologically similar to B. dolichophylla, has been recently recovered in Zembra Island (Tunisia). A phylogenetic reconstruction involving all these tetraploid taxa was performed using both plastidial and nuclear markers (trnL-trnF and ITS, respectively). For all these taxa, an allopolyploid origin involving B. romana and B. dubia is suppor… Show more

“…According to recent literatures, these genera belong to Asparagaceae family (Chase et al, 2009). The studies done in Turkey by Firat et al (2014), and Yildirim et al (2014); in Iran by Jafari et al (2016); and in Italy by Astuti et al (2017), all classified the two genera within Asparagaceae family, while in Iraq there was only one study by Abdul-Raheem and Al-Bayaty (2018) that classified Bellevalia and Ornithogalum within Liliaceae.…”

“…Amongst Italian narrow endemic plants (Bartolucci et al 2018), the Webb's hyacinth (Bellevalia webbiana Parl., Asparagaceae) is one of the most evolutionarily relevant (Chiarugi 1949;Borzatti von Loewenstern et al 2013;Astuti et al 2017a) and threatened species (Orsenigo et al 2018). According to Gestri et al (2010), the range of this bulbous perennial herb is restricted to an area of pre-Apennines (100-700 m a.s.l.)…”
