PHYLOGENY AND GENETIC VARIANCE IN TERRESTRIAL MICROCOLEUS (CYANOPHYCEAE) SPECIES BASED ON SEQUENCE ANALYSIS OF THE 16S rRNA GENE AND ASSOCIATED 16S–23S ITS REGION1

Abstract: Thirty‐one strains of Microcoleus were isolated from desert soils in the United States. Although all these taxa fit the broad definition of Microcoleus vaginatus (Vaucher) Gomont in common usage by soil algal researchers, sequence data for the 16S rRNA gene and 16S–23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region indicated that more than one species was represented. Combined sequence and morphological data revealed the presence of two morphologically similar taxa, M. vaginatus and Microcoleus steenstrupii Boye‐Pet… Show more

“…In our paper a new genus is classified as Wilmottia gen. novum. Comparison with literature sources (Boyer et al 2002;ŠaBacká 2004;caSamatta et al 2005;taton et al 2006;Comte et al 2007;lokmer 2007lokmer , Wood et al 2009heath et al 2010;Strunecký et al 2010b) supported this taxonomic transfer.…”

“…autumnale and other species within the group VII share similar features with the Microcoleus sensu stricto complex, i. e. homogeneous cell division and thylakoid structure, as noted by Boyer et al (2002) and Komárek and Anagnostidis (2005). Consequent research on Microcoleus vaginatus and P. autumnale samples from different aquatic systems yielded a taxonomic revision of P. autumnale into Microcoleus autumnalis (Trevisan former Gomont) Strunecky, Komárek and Johansen comb.…”

“…An analysis of morphology, 16S rRNA-based phylogeny and 16S-23S ITS secondary structure revealed very close relations with soil crust M. vaginatus strains . 16S rRNA of all strains also contained an 11 bp insert typical for this species (Boyer et al 2002). Phenotypic characters (i.e.…”
