Phylogeny of millipedes - a cladistic analysis

Abstract: Summary Application of the principles of cladistics, or phylogenetic systematics, to the class Diplopoda indicates monophyly (in the strict sense) of the taxa Penicillata, Pentazonia, Colobognatha (minus Siphoniulus?), Nemathophora, Merocheta, and Juliformia. The result agrees with traditional classifications but stands in contrast to the classification by Hoffman (R. L. Hoffman, 1979: Classification of the Diplopoda. 237 pp. Muséum d'Histoire naturelle, Genève). At higher levels, the analysis indicates strict… Show more

“…Exclusive paternal care is known to occur in some millipede taxa. The family Andrognathidae is particularly interesting because it includes both paternally caring and maternally caring species (Enghoff 1984; Kudo et al. 2009).…”

“…The Nematophora are, i.a., characterized by having two or more spinnerets on the telson (Enghoff 1984). Telsonian spinnerets have also been reported from species of the order Polydesmida, superorder Merocheta, and possibly the very poorly known order Siphoniulida (Shear 2008).…”
