Phylogeography of a widespread species: pre-glacial vicariance, refugia, occasional blocking straits and long-distance migrations

Abstract: The strawberry tree diverged into two groups during the Quaternary, but before the LGM, surviving in refugia located in the western end of the Mediterranean region and with the Eastern Mediterranean being colonized more recently. This migration was possible because Europe and North Africa were occasionally connected through the straits of Gibraltar and Sicily. Likewise, our evidence supports arrival in Ireland from northern Iberia in post-glacial times. Altogether, our results reveal the considerable ability o… Show more

“…The species’ survival depends on the speed of dispersal, especially in fragmented landscapes, to keep up with climate change [41]. Indeed, according to Santiso et al [44], A . unedo reveals a considerable ability to disperse, migrating over thousands of kilometers, and this will be very helpful under future climate changes scenarios.…”

“…unedo , during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) [16, 52]. Moreover, Santiso and colleagues [44] in a phylogeographic study of the species, refer that the strawberry tree survived the late quaternary, in the western Mediterranean, due to the existence of ancestral haplotypes, restricted to that region. Indeed, during the Pleistocene, the regions with lower latitudes in Europe were cooler, and the Iberian Peninsula coastal areas were less glaciated, compared to inland regions ([8] and references therein).…”

“…Previous studies have explored species-climate relationships for a wide variety of organisms in this area (e.g. Petit et al 2005;Youssef et al 2011;Planas et al 2014;Santiso et al 2016), as well as the ecological specialization of Mediterranean elements (Thompson et al 2005). The Mediterranean biogeographical pattern is also one of the 16 major patterns identified in lichens (Galloway 2008).…”
