Physical Activity Is Associated With Glucose Tolerance Independent of Microvascular Function: The Maastricht Study

Abstract: MVPA and PF were independently associated with 2hPG, irrespective of established risk factors and generalized microvascular function. The possibility that specific microvascular functions, eg, insulin-mediated vasodilation, influence the association of MVPA and PF with 2hPG needs further investigation.

“…The majority of individuals were involved in recreational activities comprising moderate aerobic exercise for 3 to 6 h/wk. Moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity levels were determined from established questionnaires, as previously described (21). Inclusion criteria comprised healthy status; absence of current medical symptoms or medication limiting incremental exercise testing; and no history of cardiac, pulmonary, or neuromuscular diseases.…”

“…However, a paper published more recently, clearly showed that after only 4 days of bed rest both insulin sensitivity and skeletal muscle fiber cross-sectional area decreased, while capillary density increased, in healthy young subjects ( Montero et al, 2018 ). This suggests that muscle capillaries do not primarily influence insulin sensitivity through impaired nutrient delivery in the absence of aging or pathological conditions ( Montero et al, 2016 ). The most relevant changes responsible for insulin resistance might involve the expression and/or activity of insulin receptor β-subunit, Akt, GLUT4, AMPK and many other intracellular signals known to be involved in the insulin effect ( Lassiter et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Ninety healthy women and men throughout the adult lifespan (20–89 yr) were recruited via electronic/printed advertisements on community notice boards in the city of Calgary. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity levels were determined from established questionnaires as previously described ( 17 ). Inclusion criteria comprised healthy status, absence of current medical symptoms, and no history of cardiac, pulmonary, or neuromuscular diseases.…”
