Physical activity levels in three Brazilian birth cohorts as assessed with raw triaxial wrist accelerometry

Abstract: Background: Data on objectively measured physical activity are lacking in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to describe objectively measured overall physical activity and time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in individuals from the Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohorts, according to weight status, socioeconomic status (SES) and sex. Methods: All children born in 1982, 1993 and 2004 in hospitals in the city of Pelotas, Brazil, constitute the sampling frame; of these 99% … Show more

“…231 Data were processed in a freely available R package (GGIR version 1.2-0, http://cran.r-project.org, The R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria) using the previously described methodology to include time spent in sedentary, light-intensity physical activity and MVPA. 231,232 In additional, total physical activity levels were reported in mg, where g = gravity.…”

“…Seven studies examined the relationships between bouts of MVPA and health indicators (Eiberg et al 2005;Janz et al 2005;Butte et al 2007b;Mark and Janssen 2009;Holman et al 2011;Loprinzi et al 2013;da Silva et al 2014), 1 study used a longitudinal design (Janz et al 2005), and all others used a cross-sectional design. Janz et al (2005) found that children in the lowest quartile of percent body fat at 2-year follow-up had higher VPA in 5-min bouts (but no difference in MPA in 5-min bouts) at baseline compared with the 3 higher percent body fat quartiles.…”

“…26 A wrist accelerometer study in Pelotas, Brazil, revealed that overall moderate/high physical activity, when defined as a >100 mg acceleration magnitude, was below 1 hour per day for all age groups. 27 In Colombia, leisure time levels of physical inactivity ranges from 57% to 79% (they defined inactive if a subject never engages in moderate or vigorous leisure time physical activity for as long as 10 minutes at once). Thus, further studies in the Peruvian context are needed to improve our understanding of the impact of environment on physical activity levels.…”
