Systematic review of the relationships between objectively measured physical activity and health indicators in school-aged children and youth

Abstract: Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is essential for disease prevention and health promotion. Emerging evidence suggests other intensities of physical activity (PA), including light-intensity activity (LPA), may also be important, but there has been no rigorous evaluation of the evidence. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the relationships between objectively measured PA (total and all intensities) and health indicators in school-aged children and youth. Online databases were searc… Show more

“…The health benefits of regular physical activity (PA) for young people are well-documented (Janssen & LeBlanc, 2010; Poitras et al, 2016), yet an estimated 80% of adolescents aged 13–15 years worldwide fail to reach minimum PA guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) per day (Hallal et al, 2012). Girls are consistently identified as less active than boys (Currie et al, 2015; Hallal et al, 2012), with an estimated 95% of adolescent girls aged 13–15 years worldwide failing to reach minimum PA guidelines (Hallal et al, 2012).…”

“…Physical activity in childhood and adolescence is associated with improved physical and psychological health (Poitras et al, 2016). As both physical activity and obesity commonly track from childhood into adulthood (Telama et al, 2005), establishing strong habits for engaging regularly in physical activity during childhood and adolescence is vital to the prevention of obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.…”

“…In children and adolescents, adiposity, cardiovascular biomarkers, bone health, physical fitness, quality of life, motor skills development, and psychological distress have been associated with physical activity (PA), measured either in terms of minutes dedicated to total, light, moderate, and vigorous intensities [1][2][3][4] or sedentary time. 1,5,6 Current Spanish PA guidelines recommend that children and youth should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate-tovigorous PA (MVPA) daily and reduce screen time to no more than 2 hours daily.…”
