Physical–mechanical properties of automotive textile materials

Abstract: The role of automotive textile materials is of great importance and therefore this paper analyses the properties of such materials -airbag fabrics and upholstery fabrics. Fundamental characteristics and construction parameters of airbag fabrics and artificial leather with bonded textile fabric on the back side, as well as joining (sewing) and quality of joining places of cut parts are crucial for durability, comfort and aesthetics of the automotive interior design, and therefore were analysed. Airbag fabric sp… Show more

“…Esteves [22] studied several airbag geometries for the same company; therefore, those geometries were the starting point for this project. Then, airbag volume could be controlled through tethers, which were not reported in the literature, but textiles and threads were [24][25][26][27]. Furthermore, the materials employed in this work are actual airbag materials and correspond to some of those described by Nayak et al [3].…”

“…Car seat upholstery is generally made of different structures. Seat upholstery fabrics are used as trilaminar structures [ 9 ]. One layer of seat upholstery is lamination foam, mostly made of polyurethane (PUR) due to the comfort and protection level given by PURs, which is not achieved by any other single structure.…”

“…Today, the average car has approximately 30 kg of textiles and this is a growing trend, as high-performance and intelligent fi bers, yarns, and compound materials are assuming an ever increasing number of comfort, safety, acoustic, and fuel-saving functions with the development of lightweight constructions. Automotive textile materials are used for various applications such as fabrics for passenger safety, airbags, and safety belts, fabrics for passenger comfort of car seat covers and car interior design, as well as for different fi lters built in motor vehicles [1]. Textiles provide a means of decoration and a warm soft touch to the seats and the interior of the car, but they are also used in more functional applications.…”
