Physical Properties of Bedding That May Increase Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in Prone-Sleeping Infants

Abstract: Soft bedding has been shown in epidemiologic studies to increase the risk for sudden, unexpected death in pronesleeping infants. We compared the physical properties of conventional bedding to bedding from two sources: I ) bedding that covered the airways of victims of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) lying prone and face down at the time of death; and, 2) bedding associated with increased risk for SIDS in case-control studies (i.e. bedding filled with ti tree bark). Using simple mechanical models and the… Show more

“…Soft mattresses, including those made from memory foam, could create a pocket (or indentation) and increase the chance of rebreathing or suffocation if the infant is placed in or rolls over to the prone position. 19,20 A crib, bassinet, portable crib, or play yard that conforms to the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), including those for slat spacing less than 2-3/8 inches, snugly fitting and firm mattresses, and no drop sides, is recommended. 21 In addition, parents and providers should check to make sure that the product has not been recalled.…”

“…Although a direct causal relationship between the prone elevated position and SID has not been demonstrated [73], and only a small number of children at risk for SID may suffer from GOR (and vice versa), it has become difficult to recommend positional treatment as a 'first-line' measure in the regurgitating infant for ethical, legal and psychological reasons. Parents may not accept the idea that exactly the position told inappropriate for their (healthy) baby, will be appropriate for their sick baby.…”

“…Soft or loose bedding is an established risk factor for asphyxiation and SUDI. (3,8,9) It is important that bassinet mattresses be well-fitting, and that pillows, cushions, or loose blankets not be used.…”
