Physical therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (analysis of the evidence-based medicine)

Abstract: Introduction. The purpose of the study is to present the forms of rehabilitation used in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (CoPd) in various centres. Widespread occurrence of CoPd, significant disability, high treatment costs, permanently increasing and more profound knowledge about the pathogenesis and course of CoPd lead to a comprehensive study of respiratory rehabilitation and physical therapy of the disease. “…Physical rehabilitation in CoPd remains an issue. The current literature provides a description of pulmonary rehabilitation, which should be recommended to all patients apart from the pharmacological treatment [14][15][16][17]. Unfortunately, among the published research results on the treatment of the disease, there are 9.8-15.95% of rehabilitation studies and 3.8-11.5% of those related to physiotherapy [16,18].…”

The interventions (including breathing exercises, techniques for cleaning the airways, as well as drainage positions) that have been used in this study are actively used in Ukraine [18].…”

“…Besides the frequent symptomatic exacerbations (that need hospitalization), COPD may contribute to the gradual intolerance of exercise that eventually reduces the quality of life (QoL) of patients [1]. Reduced QoL in COPD patients may be related to the gradual dysfunction of peripheral limb and respiratory muscles that restrict the daily activities [2].…”
