Physicians reentering clinical practice: Characteristics and clinical abilities *

Abstract: Physicians who leave practice are a heterogeneous group. Most participants' performance warranted some formal education; few demonstrated global educational needs. The data from this study justify mandates that physicians demonstrate competence through an objective testing process prior to returning to practice. Emerging patterns regarding the performance of the reentering physician may help guide future policy.

“…Previous publications have described the development of the CPEP program 5 and various characteristics of its participant physicians. [6][7][8] Although other published data about physicians who present for competence assessment in the United States and Canada are limited, this body of work is growing. 3,6,[9][10][11][12] In this study, we examine CPEP program data to identify the predictors of performance on CPEP competency assessment.…”

Not until recently have physicians left practice temporarily and found themselves without a clear path to return.…”

“…Other programs function like a "miniresidency" with a personalized curriculum based on a detailed observation of the candidate's skills and planned scope of practice in which the trainee is an active part of the patient care team. 1,6,10 One such program at the University of Oregon has described their early experience with a physician reentry program in obstetrics and gynecology. 11 The most notable obstacles included appropriate candidate selection, perceived competition between the reentry candidate and resident trainees, and obtaining the commitment of faculty and medical staff.…”
