Physico-chemical Characterization, Profiling of Total Lipids and Triacylglycerol Molecular Species of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Rich B. arvensis Seed Oil from India

Abstract: Introduction Oils and fats are an essential part of human nutrition. Consumption of foods rich in cholesterol, saturated fat and trans-fat have been related with increased risk of chronic diseases whereas intake of foods rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids ω-3 PUFA such as eicosapentaenoic acid EPA and docosahexaenoic acid DHA have been correlated with their prevention 1, 2. Further, ω-3 PUFA plays a significant role in embryo development and brain function 2. Marine oils fish and algae and vegetable o… Show more

“… 40 Total triglycerides and TC content were estimated using colorimetric methods described by Fletcher, 41 Searcy, and Bergquis. 42 The FFA profile (FAMEs: fatty acid methyl esters) of total lipids extracted from liver tissues was determined through GC–MS, as described by Prasad et al 43 and slightly modified by Dalmia and Tumaney. 44 FAMEs were prepared by the esterification of fat extracted from the liver with 1 mL of BF3-methanol complex solution at 65 °C for 30 min.…”

“…The separation and quantification of tocopherols were carried out using High-performance liquid chromatography [14]. WASO (1 g) was saponified with 1 mL of potassium hydroxide (100%, w/v), 4 mL of ethanolic Pyrogallol (5%, w/v), and incubated in a water bath for 3 min at 80 • C. The reaction was neutralized by sudden cooling, and 30 mL of distilled water was added.…”

“…Plant seed oil from cultivatable Echium vulgare L. is the only commercial source of SDA-containing lipids currently available, with this member of the Boraginaceae family containing up to 11Á1% SDA levels (Kuhnt et al 2012). Buglossoides arvensis BA 26 is another member of the Boraginaceae family whose seed oil content is even higher at 19-21%, and whose SDA is generally between 17 and 21% of its total fatty acid (TFA) content (Prasad et al 2019).…”
