Background: Pomegranate arils juice is renowned for its nutritional qualities, which are influenced by various storage conditions and varietal characteristics. This study explores the physico-chemical properties and mineral content of three distinct pomegranate varieties—Ghandhri, Bedana, and Tarnab Gulabi—under different storage conditions. Objective: The primary goal of the research was to examine the impact of storage on the TSS, pH, acidity, and mineral content (iron, zinc, and calcium) of pomegranate arils juice from three regional varieties. Methods: The study was conducted at the Human Nutrition and Agriculture Chemistry laboratory at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, and the Food Science division of the Agriculture Research Institute Tarnab. Fresh and stored juices from the three varieties were analyzed to assess changes in physico-chemical properties and mineral content. Results: Storage led to an increase in the levels of zinc and iron, with recorded increases in zinc to 0.568±0.04 ppm in Ghandhri and iron peaking at 0.19±0.2 ppm in Tarnab Gulabi. However, calcium content decreased during storage, with a notable reduction to 3.13±2.93 ppm in stored juices. TSS was highest in Ghandhri and Tarnab Gulabi at 15.6±1.02, while acidity was highest in Ghandhri at 2.139±0.19. Conclusion: The study confirms that storage significantly alters the physico-chemical properties and mineral content of pomegranate arils juice, with detrimental effects on calcium levels but beneficial impacts on zinc and iron content. Notable varietal differences were observed, with Tarnab Gulabi displaying the highest phenolic content.

This study was conducted on the Salakhani pomegranate fruit, to study the impact of coating with (0.5 and 1) % flaxseed, (0.5 and 1)% black seed oil, and (0.5 and 1)% chitosan plus control treatment and with five storage periods. The fruits were harvested at full ripening stage on 2/11/2020 from a private orchard. The fruits were divided into groups according to the concentrations of flaxseed oil, black seed oil, and chitosan, as well as the control treatment and storage periods. Fruits were dried well after the coating process and placed in special boxes (carton boxes), the fruits were stored for five storage periods at a temperature of 5±1°C and with 85-90% relative humidity. The factorial experiment within the complete randomized design was used with three replicates. Coating fruits with flaxseed oil at 0.5% and 1% while black seed oil and chitosan at 1% had an effect in reducing the weight loss of fruits during storage. All coated treatments caused to significantly maintain the visual evaluation quality, and decrease the chilling injury of fruits, also increased the total soluble solid, total sugars and anthocyanin in juice content than the control except for coating 0.5% flaxseed oil. The storage for 4 months was significantly superior to the percentage of total sugars, the content of anthocyanin, maintained the visual evaluation quality and decreased the chilling injury of fruits.

Omegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit is often consumed as fresh fruit and juice. Its varied medicinal benefits in traditional medicine. The current study aimed to assess the acute and subacute toxicity profiles of pomegranate extract in male and female Sprague Dawley rats. In acute toxicity investigation, rats of both sexes were administered 1g/kg body weight of extract intraperitoneally. In the subacute toxicity trial, that was administered the extract (1g/kg body weight) intraperitoneally every 24 hours for 15 days, whereas the control group received distilled water. Daily food consumption and drink intake and rats' body weight changes were carefully recorded and documented for two weeks. Hematological measures of complete blood count (CBC), serum biochemical parameters of liver, heart, and kidney function, and lipid profile were evaluated to identify the principal harmful effects on tissues. There were no behavioral changes or mortality recorded in the treated groups. The LD50 value was greater than 1g/Kg body weight. There were no significant differences (p<0.05) in body weight gain, food, and water intake in groups. The hematological and biochemical parameters and the organ weights showed no significant alterations (p<0.05) between the treatment and control groups. Group 1, which received doses of 1 g/kg body weight of extract 2, exhibited superior outcomes in most of the parameters under investigation. This included improvements in behavior, food and water intake, average body weight, relative organ weights, and serum biochemical markers. The overall finding of this study reveals that pomegranate extract is safe up to 1g/Kg body weight intraperitoneal administration in male and female Sprague Dawley rats, and we conclude from prior results that pomegranate extract is safe.
