Physicochemical properties, bioactive composition and antioxidant activities of noni fruit juices from different regions of cultivation

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to compare the physicochemical properties, functional components and antioxidant activities of noni fruit juices from six different regions of cultivation: Samoa, Indonesia, China (Hainan), Hawaii, Thailand and Tahiti. The pH values of noni fruit juices ranged from 3.63 to 3.83, and the soluble contents were 5.97-6.97 °Brix. In regard to color, the L, a and b values of noni juices were in the ranges of 33.41-46.51, 3.44-7.98, and 2.42-22.20, respectively. The polyphenol conten… Show more

“…This agrees with the results of Yan et al [17], who observed a high level of variation in seven phenolic constituents between eight brands of noni juice produced in China, Taiwan and Fiji. Similarly, Kim et al [31] observed that the processing methods had a significant impact on the total phenolic content and bioactivity of noni juice samples. Consequently, it is likely that this high level of variation in composition between brands can be attributed to the different starting materials and processes used in their manufacture.…”

“…Upon the activation of macrophages by LPS, iNOS generates NO through the metabolism of L-arginine. While NO plays a crucial role in host defense and maintaining cell function, its overproduction in response to external stimuli can promote inflammatory reactions [41,42]. Inflammatory responses involve the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and inflammatory mediators like TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β [43].…”

“…Noni ( Morinda citrifolia ) is a perennial plant belonging to the rubiaceous family and is a tropical fruit cultivated in Thailand, Indonesia, Hawaii, and Guam. It grows mainly in volcanic soils in coastal lowlands [ 1 ]. According to an Indonesian survey in 2014, 8,577,000 tons of noni were produced [ 2 ].…”
