Physiological and microvascular responses to hemoglobin concentration-targeted hemolytic anemia in rats

Abstract: Early, chronic compensation to severe hemolytic anemia is vascular, switching to cardiopulmonary support as hemoglobin levels decline. Oxygen delivery does not correlate with serum lactate level until total hemoglobin is reduced by 75%.

“… 29 , 30 Anemia can also induce oxidative stress through endothelial damage. 31 , 32 In our study, decrease in Hb level was strongly associated with the decrease in cognitive function of patients in the CI group as compared to patients without cognitive impairment. Pearson correlation analysis in our study showed that in ischemic stroke patients, the serum APN and Hb levels were positively correlated with MOCA scores, indicating a linear relationship between serum APN and Hb levels and vascular cognitive impairment severity.…”

“…The clinically defined transfusion trigger in uncomplicated anemia is a hemoglobin level of 7 g/dL (18), which neither group reached, but comorbidities (e.g., hypovolemic shock), can elevate the transfusion trigger into the WB tHb range seen in this study. VS -101’s formulation was both effective in preventing shock from the aggressive ET and maintaining P ISF o 2 at BL levels for over 180 min, while LRS, despite a similar WB tHb, was permissive of shock and then failed to stabilize P ISF o 2 at a new steady state as seen in models of hemolytic anemia (14).…”

“…Measurements of the partial pressure of oxygen in interstitial fluid (P ISF O 2 ) of the exteriorized spinotrapezius muscle and the technical setup have been previously described in depth (13)(14)(15). Briefly, a phosphor (Oxyphore R0; Frontier Scientific, Newark, DE) bound to albumin (Bovine Serum Albumin; Sigma Aldrich, St Louis, MO) was topically diffused into the spinotrapezius' interstitium.…”
