Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by a protozoan belonging to Leishmania genus. Different clinical outcomes can be observed depending on the parasite species and patient’s health condition. The outcomes can range from single cutaneous lesions to lethal visceral form. The treatment of all forms of leishmaniasis is based on pentavalent antimonials, and, in some cases, the second-line drug, amphotericin B, is used. Beside the toxicity of both classes of drugs, in some areas of the world, parasites are resistant to antimonial. These detrimental features make fundamental the discovery and characterization of new drugs or plant extracts with leishmanicidal effects. Brazil is a well-known country for its biodiversity. Additionally, the common knowledge inherited for generations in small villages makes Brazil a source of new information and resources for the discovery and development of new drugs. Based on ethnopharmacology, elderlies were interviewed about plants they commonly used for skin diseases and infections. Five native plants from Atlantic forest were indicated; EtOH and n-hexane extracts were prepared with the vegetative organs of the plants and assayed against promastigote and amastigote forms of L. (L.) amazonensis. The major molecules of each extract were detected using qualitative nuclear magnetic resonance. Among all tested extracts, the n-hexane extract from the leave of Eugenia uniflora (Myrtaceae), enriched in myricitrin and quercitrin flavonoids, was the most effective against L. (L.) amazonensis amastigotes. This data supports the ethnopharmacology approach as a successful tool for the discovery of new drugs with leishmanicidal effects.

Indonesian Tropical Fruit Research Institute (ITFRI) known as an institute collecting exotic tropical fruits in Indonesia. The present study was carried to evaluate the characters of five exotic fruits in the Indonesian Tropical Fruit Research Institute (ITFRI), Solok, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The experiment used field observation. The characters considered were leaf character (leaf shape, leaf margin, leaf tip, leaf base, the color of upper leaf, color of under leaf, leaf surface, leaf length, leaf width), and fruit character (fruit shape, fruit peel texture, fruit length, fruit width, fruit weight, the color of mature peel, the color of mature flesh, taste, fruit weight, seed weight, seed number). Data were analyzed descriptively using tables. The five exotic fruits' morphological characteristics have demonstrated that every species of fruit has specific characteristics. These fruits have the potential to be raw materials for the pharmacy industry.

[POTENTIAL OF Eugenia uniflora L SECONDARY METABOLITES EXTRACT AS A TOFU PRESERVATIVE]. The purpose of this research is to know the secondary metabolite compounds from the Eugenia uniflora L (Dewandaru) fruit extracts , as well as to measure the potential of water extract from the fruit of E. uniflora L for the use in the tofu preserve as well as measure the impact of the addition of water extract of the fruit of E. uniflora L against moisture, pH, protein on tofu. The process of preserving test against tofu on the research done by soaking time at 2, 3 and 4 hour with each variation of the concentration of extract at 10, 15 and 20% as well as the observation time at 24 and 48 hours for each treatment.The result of the test water extract of the fruit of the phytochemical profile E. uniflora L showed the content of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic , saponins and steroid compounds. Test results from the granting of water extract from the fruit of E.uniflora L in the preserve of tofu with the variation of concentration and soaking time is proven to affect the value of water content, pH, and protein on tofu that was tested.The results of the research done indicate that the granting of a water extract of the fruit of E.uniflora L proven useful to be used as a natural preservative for tofu at 24 hours with a 20% concentration and a soaking time at 2 and 3 hours. From the results, it can be concluded that water extracts from the fruit of E.uniflora L. potential to be used as a natural preservative for tofu.
