Phytochemical and pharmacological potential of Acanthus ilicifolius

Abstract: Acanthus ilicifolius (Acanthaceae) has received considerable attention due to its wide range of secondary metabolites and its traditional usage in Indian and Chinese system of medicine. This plant is reported to be a mangrove. Mangrove survives in the most hostile environment with fluctuating tidal and saline regime. Hence, these plants are considered to be rich sources of steroids, triterpenoids, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins. Present review article is an attempt to cover recent developments in… Show more

“…Astilbin, which is isolated from S. glabra , has significantly inhibitory effects on nitric oxide, TNF- α , and IL-6 production [ 28 ] through p65, ERK1/2, and JNK pathways [ 29 ]. In addition, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and antioxidant activities have been well documented for S. corbularia [ 30 ], R. nasutus [ 31 , 32 ], A. ebracteatus [ 33 ], S. involute , S. collinsae [ 34 ], and Smilax sp. [ 35 ].…”

“…Astilbin also downregulates T cell function by suppressing activated T cell migration and adhesion and stimulating negative regulatory interleukin 10 (IL-10) production [ 35 , 36 ]. In addition, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and antioxidant activities have been well-documented for other components of WCR, including S. corbularia [ 37 ], R. nasutus [ 38 , 39 ], A. ebracteatus [ 40 ], S. involute , S. collinsae [ 41 ], and Smilax sp.
