Phytochemical, Antidiabetic, and Cytoprotective Properties of Berberis aristata DC. Root Extracts

Abstract: The present study was aimed to evaluate the phytochemical, antidiabetic, and cytoprotective properties of Berberis aristata DC. (Berberidaceae) root extracts. After phytochemical evaluation of various extracts of B. aristata roots, the ethanol extract was found to be rich in phytochemicals with the presence of alkaloid determined by the thin layer chromatography; hence ethanol extract was selected for further study. Administration of ethanol extract of B. aristata roots in diabetic rats showed dose dependent r… Show more

“…The major phytochemical studies have been conducted on Asian species, such as Berberis jaeschkeana, Berberis asiatica, Berberis aristata, and Berberis lyceum. These species showed a relatively high content of tannins, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, phenolic compounds, and carbohydrates [13][14][15].…”

“…Polyherbal extract contains good amount of alkaloids because it contains Annona squamosa and Berberis aristata which are rich in alkaloid contents [29,30]. Total alkaloid content found in Annona squamosa after extraction was 0.82% w/w.…”

“…Extracts of Berberis plants have shown interesting results in in vivo models. The ethanolic extract of B. aristata showed antidiabetic activity due to its significant dose-dependent reduction effect on the blood glucose levels (Semwal et al, 2008;Mittal et al, 2012), which were also reported to be better than glibenclamide (Rameshwar et al, 2009) and comparable to metformin in diabetic rats (Pareek and Suthar, 2010). In addition, the aqueous extract of B. aristata showed significant antidiabetic activity, decreased total cholesterol, increased HDL-C levels, and prevented the body weight loss in diabetic rats (Ahamad et al, 2012).…”
