Phytochemicals for Breast Cancer Therapy: Current Status and Future Implications

Abstract: Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies among women, representing nearly 30% of newly diagnosed cancers every year. Till date, various therapeutic interventions, including surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and radiotherapy are available and are known to cause a significant decline in the overall mortality rate. However, therapeutic resistance, recurrence and lack of treatment in metastasis are the major challenges that need to be addressed. Increasing evidence suggests the presence of cance… Show more

“…Increasingly, various medicinal plants are being screened for anticancer properties and may provide effective therapeutic agents. Numerous phytoconstituents against breast tumour cells are well documented as well as those preventing the occurrence of mammary tumours in various experimental animal models via modulation of proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, oxidative stress, inflammation, angiogenesis and several cell signalling pathways involved in breast cancer (Sinha et al, 2012;Reuben et al, 2012;Vadodkar et al, 2012;Parikh et al, 2014;Siddiqui et al, 2015;Magne Nde et al, 2015;Sinha et al, 2016).…”

“…We and other groups have summarized anticancer abilities of phytochemicals and their importance in drug development [8,9,1823]. Moreover, Siddiqui et al [24] have recently reviewed the current status of phytochemicals against breast cancer, while in the present review article, we summarize a number of phytochemicals affecting CSCs. Several epidemiological studies have correlated the consumption of phytochemicals and reduced risk of cancer.…”

“…Literature survey lead to the identification of 18 natural compounds that are belonging to Flavonoids, Isoflavones, Catechine, polyphenolic and terpenophenolic families [18] and 26 Chemical drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Breast Cancer treatment [19]. The 3D structures of these natural compounds and chemical drugs are downloaded from the PubChem database [20] in SDF format and they are converted to the PDB format using Open Babel version 2.3.2 software [21].…”
