Phytochemicals in the Fight Against Cancer

Abstract: Phytochemicals are chemical compounds from fruits, vegetables, or grains and they have been used to treat various diseases for thousands of years. More than one million people in the United States get cancer each year. Although recent advances in medicine have improved the outcomes for cancer patients, there is still a need for novel approaches in the fight against cancer. One such approach that has shown promise in recent years is the use of phytochemicals alone or as synergistic agents. In this review, we wi… Show more

“…Similar kind of findings were observed when rat models were treated with C. papaya L. induced by acetaminophen [42]. It is highly observed that antioxidants have tissue repairing capacity [43] and fight against foreign invaders, thus protecting tissue [44]. We assume due to having strong antioxidant property of the Syzygium cumini seed, the supplement considerably reduced tissue necrosis and damage which is clearly observed by our histology pictures ( Figures 5D-11D).…”

“…Phytochemicals are secondary metabolites from plants responsible for the taste, color, and aroma of fruit. Research suggests that phytochemicals are beneficial in preventing and treating oxidative damage and inflammation, which are important risk factors in cancer development [36][37][38][39]. Moreover, phytochemicals have significant onco-preventive and chemo-protective effects, and this has been reviewed extensively elsewhere [38,[40][41][42][43][44][45].…”

“…Multiple studies have demonstrated that apple phytochemicals can inhibit the activity of p21, growth factors, pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases (PDKs), cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), and extracellular protein kinases (ERKs) essential for cell cycle progression [37,126,131,132]. Furthermore, apple phytochemicals can also prevent cell cycle progression by activation of maspin, a tumor suppressor gene [127].…”

“…Авторы приписывают такой эффект высокому содержанию в яблоках флавоноидов (катехинов, флавонолов) и фенольных кислот. На выраженное противораковое действие полифенолов яблок, в том числе и экстракта яблочных полифенолов, указывают и американские ученые [17].…”
