Phytogeographical and sociolinguistical patterns of the diversity, distribution, and uses of wild mushrooms in Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa

Abstract: BackgroundMany fungal species in tropical Africa are useful, with high added value, and play essential roles in the structure and dynamic of ecosystems. However, the diversity, distribution, and uses by local populations of these non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and their respective habitats are still very poorly understood in sub-Saharan Africa in general and more specifically in Côte d’Ivoire. This study aims at (i) inventorying the wild useful mushrooms of Côte d’Ivoire within its major protected areas an… Show more

“…Numerous amanitoid taxa are harvested and consumed by local people in tropical Africa (Codjia and Yorou, 2014;Yorou et al, 2014;Boni and Yorou, 2015;De Kesel et al, 2017;Fadeyi et al, 2017;Milenge et al, 2018;Soro et al, 2019). Because of the whitish color of the basidiomata, A. albolimbata can be confused with A. subviscosa Beeli.…”

“…Still, A. subviscosa displays contrasting morphological characteristics with A. albolimbata by a slightly squamulose and viscous pileus, slightly striated margin, slightly bulbous, and slightly furfuraceous and hollow stipe, with a distinctive membranous volva (Beeli, 1935). The lack of A. albolimbata in various ethnomycological investigations (Yorou et al, 2014;Boni and Yorou, 2015;Fadeyi et al, 2017;Soro et al, 2019) attests that either local people are aware about its toxicity, or some fatal but unrecorded cases did occur within rural communities. However, it is important to educate local people on the best ways to discriminate morphologically close taxa in order to avoid the consumption of lethal Amanita species for an effective prevention of future poisoning incidents.…”

“…In Tropical Africa, however, knowledge of the traditional uses of mushrooms as well as documentation of their diversity is scarce. Despite this, and as mentioned earlier, some studies with particular emphasis on Central, East, and West Africa stated that there is a great diversity of edible and medicinal mushrooms in these regions (Soro et al, 2019).…”

“…Auricularia auricular is distributed in the wet forests of Pak Thong Chai district, Thailand [33,34]. Additionally, taxonomists described the occurrence of Auricularia cornea in different localities like wood forests of Congo Democratic Republic, west Africa including Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, and Coted' Ivoire), and Northeast of China, Yunnan province of China [35,36]. Correspondingly, recent studies have successfully described the occurrence of A. delicata in different parts of the world, mostly along the equator [37].…”
