“…Although previous studies suggested that nitrogen concentration would contribute significantly to the results (Barclay etal., 1986;Ben-Amotz etal., 1985;Shifrin & Chisholm, 1981), we did not know if other variables would interact with nitrogen concentration to affect biomass or lipid accumulation. This work has shown that conductivity influences the effects seen as a result of nitrogen concentration in three of the four models.…”

“…It has been known for some time that nitrogen (or silicon) limitation results in increased lipid accumulation in many species of algae (Ben-Amotz etal., 1985;Collyer & Fogg, 1955;Laing, 1985;Shifrin & Chisholm, 1981;Spoehr & Milner, 1949;Suen et al, 1987;Taguchi et al, 1987;Werner, 1966), but the interaction of nutrient limitation with other environmental factors is poorly understood. Temperature is known to affect photosynthesis and productivity in many algae (McCombie, 1960;Richmond, 1986;Sorokin & Krauss, 1961), but very little literature exists relating temperature to lipid production (see Fogg, 1956;Shifrin & Chisholm, 1981). Most reports of temperature effects are concerned with fatty acid composition rather than quantity of lipid accumulated.…”

“…In some extreme cases, it can reach 70-90% of dry weight (Chisti 2007, Li et al 2008. Nitrate and silicate stress has effect on the lipid content in a variety of phytoplankton (Shifrin and Chisholm 1981). Illman et al (2000) studied five strains of the green alga Chlorella, and reported an increase in lipid content in all five strains when grown in low-nitrogen media.…”

“…The main constraint of artificial cultivation is the low biomass concentration achieved, c.a. 0.1% (w/w) [3], which makes the separation process difficult and expensive. However, the importance of microalgae in aquaculture is large because they start the food chain.…”
