“…[20] Furthermore, the total sterol content of linseed at the ES was found to be higher compared to the HS. [21] The present results were in agreement with the literature. The total sterol contents of Turkish hazelnut cultivars decreased gradually to about one-third of the initial amount at the HS for Sivri cultivar, two-fifths for Palaz cultivar and one-half for Tombul cultivar.…”

“…However, Phillips et al (2005) and Ryan et al (2007) analyzed the content of phytosterol in flaxseeds observing levels of 160 mg g seed À1 and 98.2 mg g seed, respectively. The phytosterol content during the development of flaxseed was maximal at 7 day after flowering reaching values of sitosterol (830 mg g oil À1 ), stigmasterol (265 mg g oil À1 ) and campesterol (564 mg g oil À1 ) (Herchi et al, 2009). Therefore, the levels of phytosterols detected by all these authors were lower than those detected in our experiments in the best conditions, being our procedure a highly successful system.…”

“…Sterols are abundantly synthesized during early stages of seed development, coincident with a period of intense cell division and membrane synthesis (Herchi et al, 2009). Some of the cell expansion and division defects in fk, smt1, hyd1, and cvp1 may be the result of membrane structural defects from deficiency in specific sterols.…”
