Pieced Together: Collage as an Artist's Method for Interdisciplinary Research

Abstract: As a visual artist undertaking doctoral studies in education, the author required a research method that integrated her studio practice into her research process, giving equal weight to the visual and the linguistic. “…The methods of visual analysis I read about reminded me of a series of collage paintings I created in Ghana depicting the trajectory of my children's African ancestry from West Africa to Texas, where their father was born and raised. The Ghana paintings are described as visual stories and memory keys and seem quite similar to the collages discussed in social science in the literature (Leavy, 2009;Vaughan, 2005).
