Pilot-Based Synchronization and Equalization in Filter Bank Multicarrier Communications

Abstract: This paper presents a detailed analysis of synchronization methods based on scattered pilots for filter bank based multicarrier (FBMC) communications, taking into account the interplay of the synchronization, channel estimation, and equalization methods. We show that by applying pilots designed specifically for filter banks, the carrier frequency offset (CFO), fractional time delay (FTD), and channel response can be accurately estimated. Further, a novel joint FTD and channel estimation scheme, based on iterat… Show more

“…The filter bank in the proposed system consists of multiple prototype functions for performing modulations. According to conventional concept of FBMC, an empirical expression for synthesis filter will be [30], ) Where L is the channel length, M represents modulated function, and t represents maximum index of time. Therefore, an abstract representation of the filter bank would be (2) , the parameter W will represent Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform matrix, the parameter B will represent a diagonal matrix that consists of elementary multipliers and the parameter A will represent polyphase filters.…”

“…The more common naming AP has been introduced in [39]. The AP is placed at the lattice position with symbol offset µ a and subcarrier offset κ a relative to the associated pilot symbol position, as depicted in Figure 3.…”

“…We know from the literature survey that due to intrinsic interference in FBMC, it requires special pilot design, e.g. auxiliary Towards 5G Wireless Networks -A Physical Layer Perspectivepilots [16], for channel estimation. Otherwise, the performance is severely degraded as can be seen in simulation results presented in Figure 15 for TO = 80 and TO = 150 samples.…”
