PIP Kit: An Exploratory Investigation into using Lifelogging to support Disability Benefit Claimants

Abstract: Disability assessment processes are complex and stressful, with claimants finding it challenging to prepare an effective account of their disabilities to support their claim. This project focuses on a disability benefit called Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which is received by millions of people with disabilities in the UK. We present a multistage exploratory investigation into how lifelogging could help address the challenges claimants have in accessing disability benefits. In the first study, benefit … Show more

“…These frames could be available in a sandbox environment arranged by both chronological sequence of events and in narrative order, to allow for non-linear stories and multiple versions with different focus, granularity, or comments [64]. Recently, using life-logging with structured prompts and optional photos helped individuals build a case for disability benefits using storytelling to make sense of and synthesize cohesive evidence supporting their claim [120]. The lack of established guidelines in describing patient status in enigmatic conditions might ultimately empower patients to decide themselves what best represents their narrative, without expectations to follow a script.…”

“…Whilst it is now possible to effectively track the number of strokes with a fitness tracker [19], tracking where someone has been can provide more detailed performance information: this is because it is more (or less) effort to traverse different types of surfaces [55]. For someone learning how to use a manual wheelchair, this could also be an indication of rehabilitation progress and/or increased skill/confidence in using the chair: notably measuring real-world skill and performance is an important part of wheelchair skills training [45,44] (as well as separately, the assessment of disability benefits which focus on the level of functional impairment [74]). Separately, rough surfaces increase harmful wholebody vibration, with a long-term negative effect upon health [22,76], so tracking the quality could also be useful for longitudinal healthcare studies of wheelchair users.…”

“…Indeed, the value of this exercise has illustrated the extent of the requirements involved in this process. From the perspective of disability itself, many people with disabilities are more likely to be in poverty, may not be able to aford assistive technology in general, and often have communication difculties [49]. In turn, this means extensive support and reasonable adjustments would be needed, further lengthening what is already a difcult and involved process.…”
