Place vs. Node Transit: Planning Policies Revisited

Abstract: A core contemporary planning approach is the promotion of transit-oriented developments (TODs) and in recent times cities have committed substantial financial investment to encourage sustainable precincts around public transport. Evaluation of the success of TODs is key for continuing the planning efforts. A frequently applied framework for characterizing TODs draws on Bertolini’s Node-Place (N-P) model, enriched through application in various contexts. We offer here an extension to the N-P model, using a case… Show more

“…Other researchers added some indexes to measure the station's node value. Proximity to CBD area by Chorus and Bertolini 8 and congestion index by Olaru et al 9 were added to the node value. At a station, network accessibility includes two significant factors: the accessible opportunities by a station and the transport possibilities to access the opportunities 10 13 .…”

“…Peek and Van Hagen (2002) presented recommendations for railway station areas by creating synergy between node value and place value, and highlighted that place value offers a longer-term positive effect on urban economic development than node value does. Chorus and Bartolini (2011) applied it to investigate urban development (floor area ratio as the indicator) of Japanese station neighborhoods, and Duckworth-Smith & Babb (2015), Babb et al (2016), andOlaru et al(2019) brought it to Perth, Australia.…”

“…The classification of railway stops and stations is presented in [22]. An interesting typology of railway stations is proposed in [23]. The authors use a modified Node-Place model introduced by Bertolini in 1999 [24].…”
