Placental Malfunction, Fetal Survival and Development Caused by Sow Metabolic Disorder: The Impact of Maternal Oxidative Stress

Abstract: The energy and metabolic state of sows will alter considerably over different phases of gestation. Maternal metabolism increases dramatically, particularly in late pregnancy. This is accompanied by the development of an increase in oxidative stress, which has a considerable negative effect on the maternal and the placenta. As the only link between the maternal and the fetus, the placenta is critical for the maternal to deliver nutrients to the fetus and for the fetus’ survival and development. “…Anti-and prooxidants control a sensitive balance in newborns via multiple factors, such as immunoglobulins, short-chain fatty acids, and cytokines (which can be found in BM), and, through absorption and local effects, influence their reaction to intensive care treatment, survival, and development [65][66][67][68]. The impact of oxidative stress and the balance or imbalance of pro-and antioxidants control intrauterine development and postnatal life [69][70][71]. Obstetrical complications, like the premature rupture of membranes [72] or preeclampsia [73], also intensify OS-induced processes.…”

“…The placenta plays a pivotal role in transmitting antioxidative capacity between the maternal and fetal domains during pregnancy, acting as a bridge that connects and mediates stress responses [6,7]. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates a close link between placental dysfunction, maternal redox imbalance, and adverse pregnancy outcomes [8,9].…”
