Plant D–type cyclins and the control of G1 progression

Abstract: The basic pattern of controls that operate during the G1 phase of the plant cell cycle shows much closer similarity to animals than to the yeasts and other fungi. The activity of D-type cyclin (CycD) kinases is induced in response to stimulatory signals, and these phosphorylate the plant homologue of the retinoblastoma tumour susceptibility (Rb) protein. It is likely that Rb phosphorylation results in the activation of genes under the control of E2F transcription factors, including those required for S phase e… Show more

“…In a complex with CDKA, the D-type cyclin regulates the G1/ S-phase transition (Oakenfull et al, 2002). Transcripts of Pp CYCD;1 and Pp CYCD;2 accumulated between 6 and 48 h after cutting (Figures 2A and 2B).…”

“…Auxin is essential for cell division and expansion in vitro and has been used widely in cell culture and plant regeneration in concert with cytokinin. The expression of mitotic genes, including CycD3;1 and CDKA;1, has been found to be regulated by auxin (Hemerly et al, 1993;Doerner et al, 1996;Oakenfull et al, 2002). At the wholeplant level, some auxin mutants display a dramatic alteration in aerial organ development.…”

“…Analysis of CYCD -related genes in the Arabidopsis genome shows 10 genes that fall into six or seven groups (Oakenfull et al, 2002;Vandepoele et al, 2002), most of which have not been analyzed in detail. The CYCD3 group includes three genes, of which CYCD3;1 is the best studied.…”
