Plant-derived smoke: an effective seed pre-treatment

Abstract: Plant-derived smoke and aqueous extracts of smoke can overcome certain types of seed dormancy . Successful smoke (aqueous) pre-treatment of seed of the fire-climax grass Themeda triandra Forssk . is reported . The promotive effect of smoke on seed germination was retained when pre-treated seed was dried and stored for up to 21 days . Seed pre-treatment with smoke had no detrimental effect on subsequent seedling growth .

“…Physiologically: Smoke can also stimulate flowering, root initiation (Taylor and van Staden, 1996) and seedling vigour (Baxter and van Staden, 1994;Sparg et al, 2005). It enhances the germination and seedling vigour of Agricultural, Horticultural, Forage and Forestry seeds.…”

“…Thereafter, the acclimatized plantlets were transferred to the greenhouse for the experiment. Smoke-water solution was prepared as described by Baxter and Van Staden (1994) while the vermicompost leachate was purchased from Wizzard Worms Commercial Company Ltd, Greytown, South Africa.…”

“…Exposure of the seeds to short periods of far-red light overcame the stimulatory effect of the extracts. Both gibberellins and cytokinins are known to break the dormancy of Grand Rapids lettuce seeds [6], hence it is of interest to investigate whether smoke-derived extracts operate in a similar manner to either or both of these groups of plant hormones. The celery seed system [9] provides a tool for examining this aspect and also the relationship between red-light and smoke effects.…”
