Plant species and communities assessment in interaction with edaphic and topographic factors; an ecological study of the mount Eelum District Swat, Pakistan

Abstract: The current analyses of vegetation were aimed to study the different effects of environmental variables and plant species and communities interaction to these variables, identified threats to local vegetation and suggestion for remedial measures in the Mount Eelum, Swat, Pakistan. For assessment of environmental variability quantitative ecological techniques were used through quadrats having sizes of 2 × 2, 5 × 5 and 10 × 10 m for herbs, shrubs and trees respectively. Result of the present study revealed 124 p… Show more

“…These soil factors form the characteristics of habitats and can be the determinants of the distribution and diversity of flora in their habitats (Peña-Claros et al 2012;Vleminckx et al 2015;Zhang et al 2016). Some studies have shown that species diversity and composition in some ecosystems were related to the site characteristic including edaphic factors (Gautam et al 2016;Khan et al 2017). Gautam et al (2016) showed that the most important factors influencing tree diversity in the north Indian moist deciduous forests were exchangeable base cations and phosphorous.…”

“…It is important to know the phytosociological information of particular tree species for a better understanding of their ecology (Kharakwal, 2009). The identification of the plant communities helps us to acquire information about habit, habitat, niche, vegetation structure as well as various interactions among them (Khan et al, 2017). Likewise, identification of the vegetation and species diversity patterns is fundamental for the conservation of natural areas and these patterns have frequently been focusing on ecological studies (Zhang et al, 2013).…”

“…According to Swamy et al (2010), many tropical forests have lost the potential for self-maintenance due mainly to anthropogenic activities. Small-scale mining activities at the mined site could have altered the ecological factors over the area leading to the differences in the diversity, density and distribution of plant species between the unmined and mined areas (Khan et al, 2017).…”
